The Problem

Spam is annoying and leads to a massive waste of working time

Many companies still begin the working day with employees sifting through and deleting unsolicited spam emails from their inboxes. This is not only annoying and a massive waste of working time, it is also extremely dangerous. Promises of brand new video’s, attractive special offers at incredibly low prices or the last tickets for sporting events can be tempting. Almost always, cyber-criminals are hiding behind such offers, with spyware and techniques designed to steal information including passwords and credit card or bank details.

ISOSPORT needed protection from all of these threats and looked to Websense for a filtering and Email security solution. The e-mail security software provides effective protection against threats from incoming and outgoing e-mails. This is particularly true for spam e-mails, but also for messages with malicious attachments, worms, Trojans and other malicious code.

The Solution

Clear rules for Internet use

The impetus for the new security solution was the need to tackle both the growing spam problem and to gain effective control over productive and safe use of the Internet. Early on in the process, the management worked with staff to create an operating agreement. This enterprise-wide IT security policy was written down and all employees were invited to sign. The IT department wanted to be able to take these rules and implement and monitor the situation using a technology solution to ensure compliance with the new IT security regulations.

When selecting a solution the IT staff first reviewed solutions in place at other subsidiaries of its parent company Constantia Industries in Vienna. Isovolta from Wiener Neudorf had already successfully implemented SurfControl Web Filter (now Websense Web Filter). The IT department of ISOSPORT decided on a one-month trial of the software which would be used for controlling and monitoring of Internet use. The software has all the tools that the company required, offering a very flexible way to manage and regulate the Internet, and the ability to optimally adapt settings to the individual requirements of the organization.

The solution was implemented by Websense partner and network security specialists, Madras Computer from Vienna. Madras Computer had an existing relationship with ISOSPORT, having worked on different areas from consulting and planning to implementation, including support of network projects.

The we get the products from Websense - simply, quickly and inexpensively."

The Austrian specialist for plastic composite materials protects devices with Web access software for 150 employees at three international locations - including some 40 notebooks. The solution is maintained centrally at the company headquarters in Eisenstadt, and also installed the premises in Hall / Tyrol as well as in Slovenske Slovenian Konjice. “With Websense, we can cost effectively monitor and control use and potential misuse of the Internet anywhere - regardless of how or where a user accesses the Web,” says Wolfgang Wilt. “In an average week, some 1,500 websites are surfed and while threats become increasingly sophisticated, security requirements grow."

The Results

No chance for spam e-mails

Besides Web security, another trigger for the new security solution was the problem of spam, which could be dealt with by Websense product, Websense Email Security. The software scans all e-mails, including associated documents and attachments, inserted images and ZIP files. ISOSPORT now blocks around 4,000 spam emails per day and prevents spyware and other malicious applications from reaching the corporate network.

Comprehensive Connection Management protects their email infrastructure against directory harvest and denial-of-service attacks. Link level protocols allow administrators to rapidly identify effective and timely counter-measures to specific external threats. Both incoming and outgoing mail is protected.

Multiple modules available in the email security solution offer very effective protection against the increasingly complex threats such as spam, viruses, malware, phishing and malicious URLs to. The software works fully automatic and thus offers ongoing protection.

ISOSPORT plans to upgrade to Websense Web Security, which provides Real-time protection against spyware, malicious mobile code, and other threats, as well as market leading web filtering. “By upgrading, we are on the safe side and continue to benefit from the highly effective protection we are accustomed to,” says Wolfgang Wilt.
