Should I upgrade to SQL 2005 Express?

I’m a new SurfControl Admin. The former Admin walked with little notice. The company has been using SurfControl E-mail Filter for about 3 years. I have a note on my desk, left by the old Admin, that says the SQL engine (MSDE) is maxed out and must be replaced. I looked at the E-mail Filter log files and STEMLog.mdf file is almost 2 GB. Question: Is there any reason why I should *not* simply update to SQL 2005 Express? I’m trying to figure out why the former Admin didn’t do that months ago. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. It’s easy and cheap (as in free!) to upgrade to SQL 2005 Express. You can download it from the Microsoft download site.

You will definitely want to back up all your existing databases before you upgrade!!! See KB article 1571. Also, there is a good discussion of SQL database server options in KB article 3489.
