We really haven't had any issues reported with certificate verification in 7.6.5. I check the SSL Incidents every day or so and just fix the ones that are there. It's only a few and most seem to be from bad code on the web sites (usually links to Akamai with the wrong common name).
Certificate verification has not been a huge issue for us either, but I am looking at a more automated solution right now.
Also, it seems that my issue was directly related to the CRL. We turned off the SSL verification engine and the problem went away. We reenabled it, but switched from CRL to OCSP and it works like it is supposed to. Something in the CRL code must have changed or there is a specific issue on my box with CRL verification. I would prefer to use CRL over OCSP, so hopefully they get a fix for me soon.
