Hi,

This is with reference to one of the calls that i have logged with Websense about FTP site issue. the site is question is having a general username and password set to access. This does not work through Websense as it returns with the message - FTP autnentication required - user Anonymous cannot login.

The Websense technician has in turn asked me to use this way to access such sites which will work without any doubt - ftp://user:pass@ftp.xyz.com

But this is something which we need to ask the users to try out. a normal user would not be having enough knowledge to try accessing the same with various ways. These users in turn will only use Internet Explorer and end up blaming the websense to be a problem while accessing FTP's. This needs to be sorted out for Websense through latest releases.

I opened a similar case with Websense Support.  I was told that the browser proxy settings should be set to use port 8080 rather than 2121 and that the 2121 should only be used for FTP clients.  I have a follow up question to support because I have seen documentation related to PAC files that state the Proxy settings for FTP in a browser should be set to port 2121 and not port 8080.  I tested this out and it does seem to work OK for a FTP download through Internet Explorer.

Here is the exact message from support:

"This is actually a know issue.

Port 2121 is only for Native FTP clients not web browsers. Port 2121 should not be set in the FTP textbox in the proxy settings of the browser. The web browser should still use port 8080 for explicit FTP-over-HTTP proxy.

To solve the issue, please include the user name and password into the link. For example:

Please try to access ftp://titan:stickynote@ftp.fossil.com with IE with WCG as a proxy.

ftp://username:password@ftpsite"

Susie,

Thanks for the reply, but I have already received confirmation that there was an error in the documentation.  If you need to, you can refer to support Case 00612361: Error Messages in Content Gateway where you will see acknowledgment of the error in the documentation.

Hi, thank you for the info.

If our tech has confirmed that there was an error, they will correct it ASAP.

Have a nice day.

Best regards

Hi,

FTP sites WILL work in internet explorer with the Websense FTP proxy 2121.

The trick is to set ftp:// explicitly (e.g. ftp://proxy) for the "proxy address to use". Although after clicking ok and going back, the ftp:// is gone, it is still remembered and working. Make sure to always set ftp:// in front before clicking ok and it will work.

In GPO you can do the same, set ftp://proxy explicitly, there it will be kept shown. I did several setups like this and they all worked succesfully. The big advantage is that you no longer need to instruct your clients to use ftp://username:password@server:port anymore! It will work with just specifying the ftp address and will ask for authentication properly if required.

Good luck with this ;)
