We have a customer with two email filtering servers, server A running websense 6.1.1 and server B running surfcontrol 5.5.0.  These both share a SQL 2005 Express database on server C.  Server C also runs PEM and Report Central.

Could you confirm the best approach to upgrading the customer to 7.2?

I am considering that it may be best to UNinstall surfcontrol 5.5.0 from Server A altogether; upgrade the 6.1.1 server to 7.1 and then 7.2, upgrade PEM and Report Central to 7.2 and then install Websense 7.2 from scratch onto Server A.  I am hoping this would save me having to upgrade from 5.5.0 all the way to 7.2.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Mark,

Do you want to upgrade both WES V6.1.1 (server A) and Surfcontrol V5.5(server B) to WES V7.2?

Below is the upgrade path for your WES 6.1 and Surfcontrol V5.5 to the latest WES v7.2 :

SEF 5.5 -> SEF 5.5 SP1 -> WES 6.1 -> WES 6.1 SP1 -> WES 7.1-> WES 7.2

Please see the below Installation Guide regarding the information upgrading from earlier versions (page 30) Installation Guide for Websense Email Security v7.2

Thanks Susie,

I followed this up with a support call and since the older server is in a DR site, I decided it would be quicker to just upgrade the 6.1 box using the process you outline above and uninstall SEF from the 5.5 box followed by a re-install with WES 7.2 which I would point at the now updated databases on the central SQL server.

Hi,

We recommend the following in case you need to revert to the previous version:

1. Make a backup of your configuration, STEMConfig, database.

 2. Export your Rules from the Rules Administrator.

3. Export your Dictionaries from the Dictionary Management utility.

4. Backup STEMLog database (if you need an archived copy of historical data)

I recommend a call back to Websense Technical Support in reference to your case for any additional assistance you require while executing your migration plan as your satisfaction is important to us.

Regards

Best regards
