Hosted Web Security can be configured on a highly granular per-group or per-user basis. You can set up the following types of access control.

Time-based

You can restrict all access for users of a specific policy by time. There are 2 formats for this:

  • Allow access except during specific defined times
  • Deny access except during specific defined times

You can apply both user and group exceptions to any time-based access control that you set up.

Category-based

Hosted Web Security uses the Websense Master Database, which organizes similar Web sites (identified by URLs and IP addresses) into categories. Each category has a descriptive name, like Adult Material, Gambling, or Peer-to-Peer File Sharing. You can also create your own, custom categories to group sites of particular interest to your organization. Together, the Master Database categories and user-defined categories form the basis for Internet filtering.

You can set up both user and group exceptions for any of the Websense or user-defined categories. For example, you might want to allow the Facilities group to access travel-related sites, but block the rest of the company from access.
