I sent in an official "enhancement request", but it seems WebSense will not provide a better or more readable output for their "export Policies" button.

I suggested, that instead of all the Categories and Protocols in a single line down the page (THOUSANDS of lines, and lots of extranious information), that it list the Categories down, and columns of Policies tabbed across the top. Similar to this example below: (This took me 4+ hours to manipulate from their layout):

Category Filters
1 Default 2 Block All 3 InfoTech Filter 4 Extended Access 5 Internet Filter
Abortion Block   Block   Permit   Permit   Permit
Abused Drugs Block   Block   Confirm   Confirm   Confirm
Adult Content Block   Block   Block   Block   Block
Adult Material Block   Block   Block   Block   Block
Advertisements Block   Block   Permit   Permit   Permit
Advocacy Groups Block   Block   Permit   Permit   Permit
Alcohol and Tobacco Block   Block   Permit   Permit   Permit
Alternative Journals Block   Block   Permit   Permit   Permit
Bandwidth Block   Block   Permit   Permit   Permit

Would any others like to see this type of layout native from their "Export Policies" spreadsheet? If so, send in your enhancement requests, or reply to this post....

Wink Very clear and succinct policy output. I am up for it.

I agree, the current format is unusable.  Additionally it would be nice to be able to export Filters and Fiter Components as well.

Yes, much clearer and easier to follow. This type of report I can put in front of "decision makers".

i agree, I spend a whole day every month generating the current policies in place for our customer we deployed Websense for.  With 75 sites and 25 different policies its a nightmare to manipulate in Excel.

Please give us something more readable.  Funny the OP's format is almost exactly what I generate too with tabs across the top.

The print policies to file feature as is really is lacking any useful formatting.

Yes i would like to see this format. A great improvement on the current dump format.

I have a customer with a huge amount of policies and with the current dump XLS it has more then 100.000 lines. THis proposed format will greatly improve a policy dump.

The next thing would be to have this in a standard presentation report. Something that can eaily be read by users with permission.

Add our name to this list as well.  This format would be very beneficial for reporting to upper management.

This feature should be built in to the product.

I wrote a custom C# application to do this for me.  I shouldn't have to do that.

HEY WEBSENSE... It really sounds like this is an enhancement request that is wanted by a LOT of clients...

Pardon my venting, but how long does it take to roll out enhancements? It seems that all these requests go into your system, and fall into a large "Black Hole", never to be heard from again unless it is actually encorporated into a new release. This particular request is a great "case in point":

1: Original enhancement request sent in September 2009.

2: Version 7.5 released June 2010 (OK, I understand that it was already in development, so likely not able to be considered for this.)

3: Version 7.6 released May 2011. (I thinks that TWO YEARS is more than enough time to consider this request)

It seems that there is a "canned response" to all enhancements, then no follow-through. Below is a sample. Change the "Websense Content Gateway" to any other product, and I bet it is the same message on ALL enhancement requests.:

"Thank you for inquiring about a new feature in Websense Content Gateway .  Your request has been entered into our Feature Request tracking system, and our Product Management team will review it within the next 30 days.  If you need a response sooner, we recommend that you open a case with Technical Support.  When the request is reviewed, the product manager will decide whether to accept this for future consideration or ask for more information.  Please note that Websense receives a high volume of feature requests, and as such Websense cannot include all of these requests in the next product release.  That said, the product team is constantly revisiting the list of requests to determine the features that have been most frequently requested, so that the highest priority features are addressed.

We look forward to your continued participation in the Websense community and welcome your active involvement in our product direction."

Two observations:

1. I wholeheartedly support rlsmith999's proposed export format. I found this post by searching for exactly this solution.

2. How long does it take for Websense to implement this? Or perhaps more to the point, how do customers escalate product enhancement requests of this nature to the point where Websense says OK, let's implement asap? I was pretty incredulous to see that the original post was dated September 2009 and here we are over 2 years later still requesting the enhancement.

Short of Websense customers starting an e-petition (tempting), may I suggest that people requesting this enhancement put it in writing to their Websense account managers.

My own export results in 597 A4 pages.

It's 2012 so here is a bump for this feature.

Websense please take note of what your customers need here:

1.  Policy exporting for documentation/discussion in human readable format (not the 500+ Excel dump)

2. Put the name of the Policy that stopped a user on the Block/Continue/Quota page.

These two items are pain points for myself and others here.
